We believe that:
- Every injury can be prevented
- Safety is everyone’s responsibility
- All incidents, no matter how minor, must be reported immediately
- All incidents must be investigated
- Education and training are essential
- Safety policies and procedures must be followed
- Safety is a condition of employment
- Off-the-job safety is just as important
Major components of our national safety program include:
Take Ones and safety observations
Every employee at Hanson is required to complete a safety observation and Take One each week, where safety issues are identified and addressed. This has been very successful in facilitating a safety culture within Hanson. Specific recording systems also capture these Safety Observations and Take Ones to encourage the adoption of safety best-practices throughout our national business.
Site meetings
Health, safety and risk issues are a key discussion issue at site meetings held at all of our plants and quarries on a monthly basis. It is also a major priority at our senior and line management meeting, where safety systems and processes are reviewed and where possible, improved, to ensure Hanson Australia remains a safe place to work.
Health and safety committees
Health and Safety committees operate on-site to plan, develop, implement and monitor health and safety processes. These committees are a combination of employee and employer members and it is a policy for management to never outnumber employees.
Integrated Risk Management System (IRMS)
This is a fully integrated system that includes policies, procedures and systems to complete risk-assessments of sites and risk analysis’, ensures everyone in Hanson uses safe working methods and which is measured by a comprehensive reporting process that identifies potential hazard and quality issues.
The IRMS provides information to our employees, while improving our risk performance across the business. It covers critical areas like Occupational Health and Safety, the Work Methods that outline the minimum standards needed to perform a task or activity and a full library of health and safety forms that are used in our day to day business.
