Gold Coast Desalination Plant Minimize
Customer: Gold Coast Desalination Alliance
Construction Segment: Industrial
  • First large-scale water desalination plant on Australia’s eastern seaboard
  • It meets both local and regional water needs, aiming to provide a water source to South East Queensland. The project is a critical element of future water supply planning.
  • The project had demanding product and technical challenges, requiring a product with a design life of 100 years exposed to an aggressive salt environment.
  • Premixed concrete temperature limits also needed to be controlled using ice addition, whilst low permeability premixed concrete required the addition of silica fume and steel fibres to fully satisfy the design criteria.
  • In an Australian-first, Hanson arranged the supply of high-strength, premium-quality stainless steel fibres to be sourced specially from Belgium.
  • Twenty-percent of the premixed concrete used at the plant required these special stainless steel fibres, with their expensive price tag making the cost of reject loads one of the biggest risks involved.
  • However, no steel fibre concrete rejected and all loads delivered within the slump specification.
  • Hanson delivered premixed concrete during the day, with a subsidiary business then delivering concrete at night; twenty-four hours a day, for two weeks straight, with zero interruptions.
