Hanson Green Concrete: An Overview

We all want to do our bit for the environment. Now it’s easier than ever: by choosing a quality green concrete, you’re choosing a product that not only reduces our environmental footprint on this planet but is also increasingly superior as a concrete solution.

What is Green Concrete?

Green concrete is defined as a concrete that uses waste material as at least one of its components, or its production process does not lead to environmental destruction, or it has high performance and life cycle sustainability (Suhendro, 2014).

When produced well to both high environmental and technical standards, green concrete can not only be better for the planet but better for the customer, too – in many cases creating a product that is more valuable, more durable and more high performing over the long term.

How is Green Concrete produced?

The best green concrete producers take a number of approaches to achieve environmental sustainability. These include:

  • Innovating Substituting or replacing high CO2-producing Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) with sustainable alternatives like fly ash, blast furnace slag and silica fumes
  • Recycling Choosing to recycle material, from water and aggregates to all smart materials, to achieve a sustainable full life cycle result
  • Localising Sourcing the best local materials and using scientific testing to adjust formulas to meet national standards
  • Rehabilitating Putting back into the land what we take out, rehabilitating quarries and working with communities to find new, sustainable and positive uses for land

Hanson's Green Concrete

Our green concrete has less cement than regular concrete, but it’s just as strong. That’s because we replace some of the cement with recycled materials, like powdered slag (a by-product of steel manufacture) and fly-ash (a by-product of coal combustion). These materials provide the same bonding strength as cement but, unlike cement, they don’t release greenhouse gases during production. Plus, they’re renewable, and therefore far better for the environment.

Green Concrete for multiple uses

Hanson’s Green Concrete can be used in almost any kind of building project, including:

  • Infrastructure projects: Train stations, airport runways, sports arenas, highways, bridges, roads, footpaths & more
  • Large scale building: Multi-storey office blocks, residential developments, industrial and commercial builds
  • Small scale building: Foundations, slabs, paving, footings, driveways for residential builds and materials for DIY projects

Guaranteeing the right properties

At Hanson we adhere strictly to all best practice standards and regulations. Our Green Concrete:

  • Complies with: AS1379 requirements
  • Strength grades: 20, 25, 32, 40 and 50 MPa
  • Aggregate size: 10 and 20 mm
  • Standard slumps: 40–120 mm

A commitment to Green

At Hanson, green concrete is always readily and easily available because it follows our business ethos of being committed to doing right by the environment.

If you want to maximise your green credentials, talk to us. We can work with normal class and special class mix designs to deliver you a high quality concrete of great durability that is also kind on the environment. In many cases, it may also either outperform standard concrete solutions or in fact be better suited to your bespoke specialised requirements.

Hanson Green Concrete: Benefits

At Hanson we look to maximise the recycled content and green credentials of our concrete because it fits with our business ethos of sustainability without compromising performance – and in an increasing number of cases actually improving performance.

The benefits of Green Concrete

  • Better for our environment
  • Better for our communities
  • Better performance for you

True innovation

It is widely documented that every tonne of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) that is produced releases on average a similar amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Green concrete has broken the mould when it comes to an innovative approach to environmental sustainability. Today we can create higher performance concrete using less cement than in the past because we’re rethinking our processes and reimagining what is possible.

Using laboratory-tested and new innovative methods, green concrete has succeeded in substituting – or in some cases actually replacing – standard cement with:

  • Fly ash A coal combustion by-product
  • Blast furnace slag An iron smelting by-product
  • Silica fumes An silicon or ferro silicon alloys by-product

Radically improved production

The breakthrough in finding substitutes for ordinary cement is just one part of the important role green concrete is having on improving concrete’s environmental footprint. Other improved production methods and philosophies include:

  • Local materials Sourcing locally available materials
  • Recycled materials Using recycled materials for a full life-cycle approach
  • Recycled water Replacing potable water with recycled water
  • Recycled aggregates Replacing natural coarse aggregates with recycled aggregates
  • Manufactured sand Replacing natural sand with manufactured sand
  • Continuous innovation Concrete technologists seek to continually improve sustainability
  • Rehabilitating quarries Working with communities for imaginative, collective reuse

More Green points for you

Green concrete is about doing the right thing for our environment. But it also has other benefits.
If you’re planning a commercial project, you’ll be pleased to know our Green concrete satisfies all the requirements of the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) Green Star rating system. For every use of green concrete, you can add between one and three Green Points to your project.
